Tolex and tweed – coverings for amp and speaker cabinets or casings
Covering materials for amps and speakers must withstand quite special stresses and were designed accordingly robust. Over time, two materials have proven to be particularly good combinations of looks and functionality: Tolex and the Tweed fabric made of cotton fibers used by Fender.
Tolex, as a plastic, is available in a variety of embossings and is regularly used by manufacturers like Marshall, Soldano, Laney, Hiwatt, and Mesa for the exterior of amps and cabinets. There are virtually no limits to imagination and creativity with this covering material. From classic Elephant Tolex to various patterns and colored variants, we can offer our customers a wide selection of fabrics.
Tweed, as a natural product, is somewhat more susceptible than Tolex but earns over the years that unmistakable, incredibly attractive patina that made the Fender Tweed amps of the 60s so famous. Of course, we offer our customers the real cotton Tweed – pure nostalgia.
Grille cloth
Not only do enclosures need to be protected and packaged, but speakers also belong behind fabric. Our selection of special grille cloths gives old cabinets a new look and protects the sensitive cones from damage.
The special fabrics protect the speaker without interfering with the sound and its development. This is achieved through high-quality processing and special fabrics that visually align with the great designs of the last decades. Welt cord, adhesives and strips – accessories
Properly applying covering materials requires patience, experience, and the right equipment. In addition to the suitable fabrics, we also supply our customers with the necessary adhesives and welt cords to make attaching the new outer layer as simple and professional as possible.
While manufacturers have changed the look of their covering material over time, the basic processing method has remained largely the same: The covering material is glued onto the enclosure, corners, and edges are provided with corresponding strips, and the grille cloth is evenly attached using welt cord strips. Often, the so-called grill cloth just needs to be stapled to the baffle board.
