A lot of money goes into high-end instruments and, in the case of electric guitarists, into tube amplifiers. In this article, we present two DIY approaches and take a closer look at who might actually benefit from diving into the world of amp building.

Custom Tube Amps – What’s Possible?

At first glance, building a tube amplifier sounds like a massive undertaking. And in truth, it is! But it’s far from impossible. With the right tools, solid craftsmanship, and – of course – a proper guitar amp schematic, it’s entirely feasible to solder together a custom-built guitar amp. Fortunately, many original schematics have survived and are still accessible today. Most amp parts and replacement components can be easily ordered online. And if you’re looking for step-by-step instructions, the internet also offers a wealth of detailed build guides.

There are basically two ways to approach this project: The first is to collect all parts yourself and build the amp from scratch. The second is to use a ready-made amplifier kit, a so-called amp kit, for assembly.

Alluring but Complex – The Full DIY Build

The technology that gave tube amps in the 1950s and 60s their legendary sound is far removed from today’s high-tech world. If you have the necessary expertise, you can track down an original vintage schematic and start sourcing components to bring your dream amp to life.

But beware: these schematics often rely on parts that are no longer available in their original form. And even if you do manage to find a few NOS (New Old Stock) components, there’s no guarantee they’ll harmonize well with modern parts.

In the end, your musical ear and technical precision will make the difference. Even a minor deviation in cable gauge or capacitor values can result in a working amp – but whether it lives up to its sonic promise is far from certain. Especially when even small changes to the schematic are involved. If you’re serious about building your own guitar amp, you’ll generally be better off with a high-quality amp kit.

Since 2021, Tube Amp Doctor and CTS Corp. have been collaborating to produce (passive) electronic components for electric guitars and their amplifiers of the highest quality, at boutique level. What type of potentiometer am I? We aim to answer these questions and take some time to appreciate these components, which – in our opinion – don’t receive the attention they deserve.

Space Technology for the Guitar

Before we dive into the main topic, here’s a brief history of CTS. Who are they and why are they so good at this?

Founded in 1896, CTS Corporation is a leading developer and manufacturer of products ranging from aerospace and automotive to industrial and medical applications. The company produces sensors, actuators, and electronic components in North America, Europe, and Asia, developing smart ways to adapt to ever-changing needs. This includes the well-known TAD Custom Potentiometer Series, made by CTS for amps, guitars, and basses, in incredible quality since 2021!

The New High Torque Series – A Little More Resistance, Please?

The well-known TAD CTS potentiometers are quite smooth in operation! Quick to the target, for a fluid live performance. But for those who prefer a bit more sensitivity, rejoice, because the High Torque Series (HTQ) offers an additional feature to the beloved CTS quality. This series operates with a higher or, better said, a bit more resistant torque compared to the conventional TAD Dimple-Pot Series by CTS. It might sound like more work at first, but it’s a wonderful secret weapon when you know how to use it effectively.

These are the same potentiometers, but with a higher torque factor. But why do we need such a variety of guitar potentiometers? What type of potentiometer am I?

Before we reconsider our playing style and handling of the instrument, we’d like to clarify when each potentiometer series is most useful, in our opinion. It’s important to understand that this isn’t about advantages or disadvantages! Much like the different scales of various guitar types – whether the longer, more wiry scale of a Strat & Co. or the shorter, but more powerful variant of a Les Paul – the demands on these tiny knobs are just as varied and are often seen as mere decorations by some guitarists – until now

While most people see the ultra-low torque of our TAD Dimple-Pots as an advantage for quick action, others prefer a more tactile feel, and that’s exactly what the HTQ Series offers.

How Do I Properly Use a Guitar Potentiometer?

The possibilities offered by the instrument’s built-in electronics are often underestimated! Sure, we know the enormous differences pickups can offer – low or high output, clear sound or more gritty and dirty – but what advantages do my built-in guitar potentiometers offer, and how do I use them correctly?

Application and Different Uses of Guitar Potentiometers

The fundamental factor here is how you want to work with the instrument (on stage, in the studio, or at home) and what advantage this type of potentiometer offers over pots with less resistance – if you can call it an advantage, as the application and effect are as varied in handling as they are in different styles and sounds!

How Do I Use My Guitar and What Do I Want to Achieve?

When talking about musicians or guitarists who want to get straight to the point and use the volume pot as a sort of on/off switch or standby, the recommendation clearly goes to the easy-turn variant. This offers little resistance, so the guitar can quickly and smoothly go back to 100% and sound full. The goal is quickly achieved without much resistance. From 0 to 100 in a fraction of a second – whether volume or tone, it’s also great for certain effects like swellings or tremolos, as seen and loved in Brian May’s “Brighton Rock” solo in the Wembley performance. Low resistance, easy use with a quick effect – always perfect when the effect should be immediate and noticeable.

But what if the guitar potentiometer should be a tool for the tone needed at the moment? For example, the volume pot doesn’t just control the output volume (depending on the wiring), but is also wonderfully useful as a tone control! In this passage, it’s softer and less distorted, smooth and fine, and for the chorus, it should be full throttle again and really crank, and when the solo comes, loud and creamy! Famous rockers like Clapton and Page are known for controlling their required sound simply and easily via the tone and volume pots on the guitar – the result speaks for itself! The easy-turn guitar potentiometer could overshoot the mark here. A slight turn too far can be enough to unintentionally bring a completely different sound on stage. The greater resistance of the HTQs ensures secure handling – always on point!

The desired (but still subtle) resistance is a great help here!

Conclusion

It’s clear that the differences in using guitar potentiometers are as flexible and varied as the music itself. With the knowledge of how to use these tools precisely, they open up possibilities that might otherwise only be achieved by purchasing an expensive pedal or additional channels on the guitar amplifier. The 12AX7A electron tube is one of the most widely used preamp tubes, continuously produced since its development. Today, we examine the technical features that have made these products so popular. We also take a look at the history of these components and reveal the possible applications, both musical and technical, for the dual triode. Additionally, we’ll highlight which iconic amps typically use this electron valve.

Technical Details and Features

The 12AX7A (also known as ECC83 or 7025) is a preamp tube in a dual triode design. This variant features two identical, parallel-operating triode systems housed within a single glass envelope. The electrical characteristics of the tube can vary, making symmetry matching for preamp tubes by TAD attractive to achieve maximum dynamics and tonality.

The 12AX7A is particularly well-suited for audio applications due to its low noise and high internal resistance of 60-80 kiloohms, and is primarily used in guitar amplifiers as well as Hi-Fi equipment. The 12AX7A is built on a noval base and can be operated in two modes: either with 6.3 V heater voltage at 300 mA heater current, or with both triodes connected using 12.6 V / 150 mA. The ECC83 models are especially robust, with an operational lifespan of around 10,000 hours. These operational hours can, of course, vary depending on the application and should be considered as an approximate guideline.

The high amplification factor of 100 has made the 12AX7A an absolute icon in the realm of tube amplifiers over time. Many other manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon, copying, adopting, and modifying the design. Various versions of the original which is the 12AX7 have been developed, including the 12AX7A.

12AX7A vs. 12AX7

In the relevant literature and discussions, different designations for the ECC83 circulate. While the triode originally developed by RCA bears the name 12AX7 (ECC83), newer developments are labeled 12AX7A. These tubes are interchangeable. The modern electron valves with the additional “A” designation are designed to operate with minimal noise. The heater performance has been adjusted and microphony minimized – two points that make the 12AX7A or ECC83 a perfect audio tube, earning it the “low-noise” label.

Functionality of the Dual Triode

A dual triode essentially consists of two individual triodes housed within a single glass envelope. A significant advantage of this design is the increased amplification factor of the electron valve. With a cascading setup, dual triodes amplify much more efficiently than simple triode variants, achieving a significantly higher amplification factor.

Historical Background

The 12AX7A was developed in 1948 by the American company RCA. Even at the time of development, the usefulness of electron tubes was foreseen – the ECC83 was explicitly designed for use in low-frequency applications. Developed as a joint project by RCA, Sylvania, and General Electric for the U.S. military, the valve was introduced as “the first dual triode for high gain and low noise.”

By the 1950s, electron tubes found its way into the Hi-Fi world and later into the first guitar amplifiers. Most manufacturers (both Hi-Fi and instrumental) relied on a further developed version of the ECC83 produced by the Philips-Mullard group – tubes from this production series are among the most sought-after collector’s tubes today.

From the first Fender Tweed-style amps to VOX and Soldano amplifiers to modern Marshall DSL100 amps – 12AX7A valves are found in so many amps that they have become somewhat of a prototype for an ideal preamp tube. And this continues to this day – the 12AX7A is one of the few valves that have been continuously produced since its market introduction!

Applications and Uses

From early Fender Tweed models to modern valve amplifiers, the dual triode is still used as a standard in the preamp stage. The high amplification performance with relatively low noise is especially effective in the preamp stage.

Technical Characteristics in Preamp Use

When amplifying a signal with a valve amplifier, the input signal is not only boosted but also somewhat “colored” by the respective electron tube. Whether specially tuned frequency responses, harmonic distortions, or specific sound profiles – a preamp tube plays a crucial role in shaping an amplifier’s sound. The amplification in the preamp gives the signal its presence, which is further processed after leaving the preamp and finally amplified by the power tubes. This means every nuance that a preamp valve adds to the signal is further amplified at the end of the circuit. It’s no wonder that the harmonically resolving 12AX7A is so commonly found in guitar amplifiers.

Sound Capabilities

The 12AX7A or ECC83 is a true multitasker when it comes to sound. The dual triode can handle everything from gentle, bluesy tones to hard distortion sounds. Due to its high amplification performance, the 12AX7A offers a significant headroom with a broad frequency spectrum. This tube variant allows for extended clean operation. When the tube enters distortion, it delivers tight basses, silky highs, and a broad, balanced frequency spectrum that can be easily adjusted to different instruments and effect devices.

Indestructible and Indispensable to This Day

The 12AX7A tube is an absolute classic among electron tubes and has been produced almost unchanged since its introduction in 1948. Modern variants of the tube can be found in amps from all well-known manufacturers (Marshall, Fender, Engl, Diezel, Soldano, etc.). Original components from old production lines, known as NOS (New Old Stock) parts, now fetch a handsome price among collectors. The sound of the ECC83 triode is quite varied and not limited to a specific genre. However, the particularly harmonious distortion of the ECC83 has long been known among guitarists, and virtually every individual guitar sound can be enhanced with a high-quality dual triode.

The sound of an electric guitar is influenced by many components and factors: playing technique, effect devices, passive amplifier components, and of course, the amplifier tubes play a crucial role. Together with the tubes, the pickup has the strongest influence on the sound and tone character. Whether single-coil or humbucker, active or passive, high output or very tame – the pickups significantly shape the sound. Today, we want to explain what is meant by “splitting a humbucker” and the advantages of coil-splitting.

How a Humbucker Works – A Brief Explanation

Humbuckers offer a wide range of sounds! Pickups for electric guitars operate on the age-old physical principle of induction. Simply put, it works like this:

A pickup consists of the following components: a magnet, coil, and metal cores. The coil wire is tightly wound around the magnetized pole pieces (the metal cores) and is at the center of the magnetic field. When another magnetic metal part (like the guitar strings) enters this magnetic field and moves within it, a weak electrical current is induced. This current travels through the wire to the amplifier.

The unique feature of the humbucker is that it has two coils placed close together, canceling out each other’s hum. But for those who want more than the creamy, warm, and highly characteristic sound, there are technical modifications that can be made!

Requirements for Splitting Humbuckers

The coils, which are normally wired in series, have a total of four ends. In the classic configuration, one is connected to ground, one establishes the necessary connection, and one is soldered as the hot output at the output. Often, the wiring is encased in wax, so the pickup only has two visible wires, limiting modification options. However, if four wires are available (as with most commercially available parts), splitting is possible!

Switches for the New Setting

Before we get to the different options, here’s a brief overview of the different switch types used in modified humbucker settings:

Mini-Switches

These small switches are embedded in the guitar body and can be easily and quickly operated. Downside: Additional drilling may be necessary to place and connect the switches.

Push-Pull Pots

Push-pull pots are regular potentiometers with an internal switch. When the guitar pot is pulled up, the switch opens. When the pot is pushed back down, it closes. The advantage: despite wiring variations, existing holes can be used.

Different Wiring Types – Splitting and Tapping

What options are there for splitting a humbucker? We introduce the two most common modifications below.

Coil-Split

To split a humbucker, the four wires must be free and accessible. First, the start of the first coil is connected to ground in the traditional way. The connection between the two coils is also made in the usual way. However, a switch is inserted between the connection of the two coils, which can essentially cut the connection by grounding the start of the second one (and simultaneously the end of the first).

The wiring now looks like this: Coil A is grounded at both the start and end of the wire – no signal. Coil B has a ground and an output, which we know as classic single-wiring. By activating the switch, the grounding is switched on and off. This is how you can quickly and easily turn a humbucker into a single-coil.

Humbucker Splitting – The Sound

Splitting Humbuckers is the most common and probably the most popular modification for pickups. The result of splitting is a sound that resembles the tone of a single-coil but is somewhat clearer and less mid-heavy. However, the modification makes it more sensitive to various interferences. Compared to the quite voluminous and mid-heavy sound of a humbucker, the sound after splitting is much more delicate and refined. The highs of the signal are emphasized, while the basses lose dominance in the new configuration. Especially for solos, splitting can create very high-resolution, elegant tones. However, the signal loses some punch – strong distortions can also cause noise, requiring very sensitive guitar playing.

While the sound after splitting a humbucker resembles that of a single-coil, noticeable tonal differences remain – in nuances, a split pickup sounds “smaller” and less dirty than pure single-coils, especially in combination with a tube. But it also depends on the fundamental characteristics of the respective pickup.

Coil-Tapping

This technique describes switching the coils to parallel operation. Both are wired in a way that they run in normal series operation on switch position A, but in switch position B, the wiring changes to parallel operation. The resulting tones are even brighter than those of a single-coil but are less prone to interference due to the two active coils. A detailed wiring diagram should be created and matched to the switch used for this complex wiring.

Parallel Wiring – The Sound

Parallel-wired coils work like two synchronized single-coils. Compared to splitting a humbucker the traditional way, the sound is even brighter and clearer. The midrange presence typical for guitars is reduced, but the pickup continues to operate with two coils and is therefore less prone to interference. Due to the very complex wiring required for parallel operation, splitting the pickup traditionally is generally the more reliable option.

Splitting or Parallel Wiring?

Splitting a Humbucker or other wiring methods can significantly affect the sound and character of an electric guitar. The prerequisite for the new sound paradise is the internal wiring of the pickup used – if four wires are available, all sorts of modifications can be implemented.

Many new sounds can be coaxed from the instrument – assuming a high-quality pickup. Musicians need some experience with a soldering iron and a bit of finesse to implement the modifications. With a detailed wiring diagram, the right tools, and some patience, you can unlock entirely new sounds from your familiar guitar. Happy experimenting!

Tube, Transistor, Digital – Which Type Should It Be?

1. Like guitar amplifiers, bass amplifiers come in different forms. Tube amps are considered the classic representatives of analogue signal amplification. Electron tubes amplify the weak input signal to an output level that can be reproduced through speaker cabinets.
2. Transistor amplifiers use modern technology and transistors to perform the same task.
3. Digital amps, also known as Class D amps, work purely digitally and represent the latest development stage, which is constantly being developed further.

Tube Bass Amplifiers

Tube amps have been the core of musical amplification for guitar and bass for over 70 years – and rightly so! Their basic functionality has changed very little during this time. The produced sound is extremely dynamic and provides a natural and pleasant foundation. Bass amplifiers based on vacuum tubes offer musicians a particularly wide range of natural and organic tones. Unlike digital or transistor types, tube amplifiers offer very high dynamics. The nuances of playing are captured and amplified more detailedly by the amplifier than in transistor amps.

While the sonic advantages of tube-based bass amps cannot be praised enough, there are also disadvantages to analogue technology. Besides high acquisition costs and maintenance intensity (keyword: tube replacement), tube devices are generally larger and heavier than their digital counterparts, making them impractical for musicians who perform frequently with their bass.

Transistor Amplifiers for Bassists

The transistor variants were developed to replace analogue tube technology with lighter, more compact, and above all, robust technology. With a very neutral sound characteristic, transistor amplifiers achieve significantly higher volumes in clean sound without coloring the instrument’s tone. However, these devices are often criticized for a certain coldness in their sound; natural frequencies and, at higher volumes, distortions generally sound more artificial and less dynamic. Compared to tube amplifiers, transistor amps have the advantage of being nearly maintenance-free, in addition to their more compact and robust design. However, a disadvantage of this construction is that internal defects in the device are difficult to repair independently. Too many circuit boards and transistor-based components make a visit to a professional or even a new purchase inevitable.

While power ratings for digital amps are often very high (values like 1000 watts are not uncommon), tube amplifiers typically range between 100 and 300 watts. However, higher power does not automatically mean higher volume.

Instead, wattage affects the so-called headroom, which is the ability to amplify a signal without distortion. While low-power amps reach their limits faster and compress the signal, stronger amps play more freely and offer a more open, airy sound.

By the way: For most live performances, the wattage of an amp is irrelevant, as most amplifiers can be captured via direct line connection or miking through a PA system!

Design – Bass Amplifier as Combo or Head?

Like for guitars, bass amps are available in different designs. Besides the classic combos, where the amplifier and speaker are integrated into one device, heads offer the possibility of connecting different speakers to the amplifier.

Both types of bass amplifiers have their advantages and disadvantages: Combos are built by the manufacturer for optimal compatibility, with the amplifier and speaker working perfectly together to deliver a good overall result. Also, only one device needs to be purchased, and even though combos are generally much heavier than separate cabinets and amplifiers, this provides an advantage in transport.

Heads, as bass amplifiers, have the great advantage of being able to be used with already existing equipment. Moreover, the connected speaker cabinet significantly influences the sound, and changing cabinets and speakers can completely change the sound with little effort. Additionally, heads are very easy to transport – a huge plus for live gigs where a PA system is available!

Whichever decision is made: The collaboration between bass amp and speaker must be as perfect as possible to achieve the best result!

Anyone looking for a new bass amplifier should take their time and carefully consider the selection criteria. Digital variants deliver enormous power and can usually be integrated into a digital recording environment without any problems. However, those looking for a true analogue sound and great tone should opt for a tube amplifier. The dynamics and playing feel, the sensation of pure analogue amplification, and the ability to further personalize your sound through tube swapping are unparalleled!

Although tube amps are more prone to maintenance, no other technology can match the good old tubes when it comes to sound!

Musicians often have to resort to the living room practice space for composing, playing along, or just practicing. Especially when you don’t want to sacrifice a good tone while soloing, new problems and challenges arise for the guitarist and their amplifier, whether tube or transistor! Often, home practice conditions are far from ideal, and after the first loud riffs from the tube amp, the angry neighbors are at the door. We have therefore taken up the topic of practice amps for guitars and look at the different criteria these small amplifiers (with or without tubes) should meet.

Practice Amp for Guitar and What Criteria Must Be Met

To be able to operate a practice amp at home without problems, the amp must meet some very special criteria. We have compiled the most important criteria and reveal what really matters in an amp for home practice.

Amplifier Power

The power of an amplifier (usually specified in watts) indicates, simply put, by what factor the input signal is amplified before it reaches the speaker. Although the conclusion “more amplifier power = higher volume” is not always correct, tubes with high amplifier power are less suitable for home use. This is especially true for tube amplifiers. Higher power mainly provides greater headroom, which is the ability to keep an amplified signal clean for as long (and as loudly) as possible. Guitarists who want to enjoy fine tube distortion at home, therefore, rely on a lower-powered practice amp. Lower power allows the tube amp or transistor amp to sound more natural and open despite lower volume. Large amps with tube or transistor power stages tend to have a flatter, less open sound structure at low output levels.

Sound

Of course, a practice amp for home use must also sound good, ideally like a real tube! The necessary factors for this include lower power, well-made and wired electronics. The selection of components and tubes must be such that they retain their brilliance and sound even at low power and volume.

In recent years, especially small and quiet practice amps have increasingly included modeling amplifiers, which, due to their processor-generated sounds, operate more on the principles of hi-fi amplifiers rather than classic guitar amplifier criteria. However, there are also some small amps based on tube technology that deliver full and naturally sounding tube sound at low power.

Functional Scope

At home, there isn’t always enough space to accommodate a cabinet, effect devices, and cables along with the amp. Therefore, for a practice amp, it is advisable to prefer compact and versatile amps. Combos are particularly suitable here as they combine well-matched speakers and amplifiers in a compact design. In addition to the general design of the amp, a high-quality headphone output is essential for home use. Practicing silently with headphones allows for long practice sessions with the amp even in the most noise-sensitive apartments!

Size

Not everyone can set up a proper rehearsal room at home. Therefore, when choosing the right practice amp, consider the overall size of the amplifier. Small, compact devices in the “lunchbox format” can be quickly and space-savingly set up or stowed away, thus not interfering with daily life in the apartment despite their full functionality. An added advantage: these small practice amps can be easily and conveniently transported for spontaneous jam sessions!

Practice Amp for Guitar – Optimizing the Home Practice Environment

In addition to the technical requirements of the amplifier, small optimizations of the practice environment can further facilitate practicing at home. With a few tricks and tips, better conditions can be achieved even under challenging circumstances.

Proper Settings – Amp

To enjoy a good, fat sound at home, setting the practice amp is one of the most important tasks. Depending on the amplifier’s features, output volumes can be lowered using master volume controls or gain stages without compressing the sound too much. The use of effect devices and equipment should also be carefully planned. Less is often more at low volume, and clever adjustment of the equalizer can make big sounds from small levels!

Room Optimization

Room optimization is a science in itself, especially when setting up a studio or rehearsal room. However, the home practice room should also be optimized to achieve the best sound even under difficult conditions.

As a rule of thumb: A studio or music room should have as little “own sound” as possible. Smooth floors, walls, and large glass surfaces act as reflectors and throw the sound signal back. This often creates an unpleasant echo, which tends to “flutter” especially in the low frequencies. Simple measures can help here. A high-pile carpet should be placed between the speakers or practice amps and the listening positions. Curtains and pictures can isolate the walls. Additionally, the speaker’s position should be considered: It should not be placed directly against the wall or in a corner but should be allowed to work freely on all sides!

The Right Mindset

Let’s be honest: Despite all optimizations, settings, and considerations, no guitarist wants to forever forego the sound of a fully cranked practice amp. Sometimes, you just need that real sound blast. With the right, confident attitude and friendly relations with the neighbors, this can also be done at home – just not all the time! Our tip: A short eardrum massage in the morning causes the least trouble. And who knows, maybe the neighbors will enjoy the riffs? Approach cautiously. Practicing at home with a stage amp with sufficient power is rarely optimal. Without a dedicated rehearsal room and enough property space, spatial and sound problems arise along with social factors. Their compact design, relatively low amplifier power, and tailored functionality provide a very good package for reasonable practice sessions in the living room. When choosing the appropriate amp, look for a good headphone output, compact housing dimensions, and suitable amplifier power. What Exactly Does Gain Mean on an Amplifier?

To approach the optimal settings, we first need to understand the function of the gain control on the amp. Let’s start by looking at how tube amplifiers or tubes work: The signal from the input source is processed in the preamp, passed to the power amp, and then boosted to a level that can be converted into acoustic vibrations by connected speakers or cabinets.

While the power amp level only affects the amp’s volume, the gain control does much more: It influences the input signal level in the preamp before it reaches the different amplifier components. This affects the amplifier’s level, i.e., volume, but this is more of a side effect.

How Does the Gain Control Affect the Sound?

Turning the gain control influences the volume, but its main function is different: By increasing the input level in the preamp, the guitar’s sound is fundamentally changed and reproduced differently as the signal is further amplified. The increased input load puts more strain on the preamp and its tubes, causing them to overdrive and distort the signal. The English term “distortion” aptly describes what happens to the signal:

The electron tubes work near their load limits, adding linear harmonics to the signal, resulting in typical tube distortion. However, the signal in the preamp is not yet fully processed and is further boosted by the power amp. The result: an aggressive, penetrating, and very harsh distortion sound. With moderate gain settings, a softer, less aggressive sound can be achieved. Lightly driven preamp tubes produce cleaner, less gritty distortion with a softer tone.

Distinguishing Gain and Volume Controls

When the gain on the amplifier is adjusted at lower levels, a significant increase in volume can be observed. However, these functions serve different purposes. While the gain control drives the preamp, the volume control increases the overall loudness of the system, primarily affecting the power amp working later in the amp’s internal sequence.

The classic power amp tubes are responsible for boosting the signal to a level that stimulates the speakers to produce sound – converting electrical signals into mechanical movement. A cranked volume pot can also produce considerable distortion – in the context of tube amplifiers, power amp distortion or saturation is referred to as overdrive. The sound of a driven power amp is softer and more natural than distortion. Overdrive has a woody tone, reminiscent of the well-utilized EL34 tubes in Jimi Hendrix’s power amps during his legendary Woodstock performance or Malcolm and Angus Young’s work with AC/DC.

Setting the Amplifier Gain – Examples

Tube amplifiers are among the most powerful and versatile amps available to guitarists. In addition to effects like reverb, the type of distortion used is crucial. Here are three basic settings every guitarist should try.

Clean Sound with Character

A crystal-clear clean sound can be captivating, but a well-balanced amp’s characteristic, rough voicing is especially atmospheric. Achieving this sound requires care and finesse. Both the preamp and power amp are equally driven, giving the sound a distinctive quality. A great example of combining minimal preamp and power amp saturation is the song “Windowpane” by the Swedish band Opeth. Band mastermind and guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt skillfully keeps the sound just below perceptible distortion without losing the structure of the gain on the amplifier.

British Rock-Sound

Fans of AC/DC, The Who, and similar bands take note: Not all British-sounding bands are from the UK, but their equipment heavily influenced their sounds. The widely used amps from Marshall, Orange, and Vox often feature the popular EL34 tube in the power amp. This tube provides structured, assertive power amp distortion. However, achieving genuine, full-sounding power amp distortion requires very high volumes!

Modern Distortion Sound

What would heavy metal be without a well-overdriven preamp sound? Bands like Metallica, Rammstein, and Trivium owe their sound to well-used gain controls – regardless of the ear-splitting volumes! This is characterized by a mid-heavy, cutting, and penetrating tone that retains structure and the often-cited “tightness” effect even at high tempos.

Setting the Gain on the Amplifier – Conclusion

Gain and volume controls are sometimes used almost synonymously by some musicians. However, their technical characteristics are fundamentally different. Gain on the amplifier primarily affects the preamp, sending a “hot” signal to the power amp. Achieving the desired sound requires balancing gain and volume settings – experimentation is key to the search for the perfect sound!

Why Vinyl Records?

Before we delve into the topic of phono tube amplifiers, let’s briefly look at the phenomenon of vinyl – how come these black discs are suddenly modern again?

Analog vs. Digital

More and more of our daily lives take place in the digital world – emails, the internet, smartwatches – no area has escaped digital technology. Therefore, it’s not surprising that more and more people retreat to the analog world as soon as they can. Hobbies, like enjoying good music through a hi-fi system, are increasingly analog. The vinyl record is the ideal complement. The purely analog recording of music, in traditional manufacturing, avoids a “conversion” of sound waves into ones and zeros – the signal comes, so to speak, completely unchanged to the vinyl medium.

If a purely analog phono amplifier is used, the circle closes, and the recording has never actually been altered.

Tactility and Collecting

Another point that speaks for the vinyl record as a medium is undoubtedly the more elaborate production and the high-quality appearance of the record, the cover, and all accompanying materials – a well-crafted record is a complete work of art that stands out on any shelf. A Spotify playlist cannot compete in this regard.

Sound

The most crucial factor in the resurrection of the vinyl record is the sound: The warmth and clarity of a good pressing are, at least in our ears, superior to any digital format and digital amplifier. Of course, there are very prominent psychoacoustic factors in this perception. But we stick to it: vinyl records, played with a good phono tube amplifier, sound lively, good, and genuine with their soundstage.

If you want to experience the fully analog sound, it’s challenging for a hi-fi enthusiast to avoid a high-quality phono tube amplifier. Of course, digital amplifiers can handle the format, but they don’t offer the charm of analog. Here’s all the information about the phono amplifier:

Why Do You Need a Phono Tube Amplifier?

To reproduce the signal stored on the vinyl record, the very low voltage of the stylus must be amplified by a special amp. Large hi-fi integrated amplifiers with a dedicated phono input can accomplish this. Often, phono preamps, or preamplifiers, are also used to raise the signal to a level that can be processed by the power amp. Without a specific input or preamp, the signal cannot be played back, and the hi-fi system cannot handle the vinyl format. But what makes a good phono amplifier?

If a high-quality tube amp with a phono input is already in use, this should generally be sufficient to enable low-loss transmissions. In this article, we want to focus on the bass guitar amplifier and its peculiarities. At first glance, the bass amp appears to be a regular amplifier. It is designed either as a transistor amplifier or based on tubes. The unique musical role of the bass guitar in modern music necessitates some adjustments to the amplifier concept – hence the question of the best system for one’s own purpose remains relevant. Especially crucial in distinguishing between guitar and bass amps are the factors of sound and power.

Factor Sound

The roles of guitar and electric bass are very different in the modern band context. While the guitar, as a harmony instrument, is responsible for creating the melodic structure of a song, the bassist, with his instrument, moves in a world between harmony and rhythm instruments. Depending on the playing style, the focus of playing lies in rhythm accompaniment with the drums or in harmonic support of the overall melody. Most often, the bass finds itself somewhere in between and must serve both aspects – just like the bass guitar amplifier.

Therefore, the demand for the sound of a bass amp is different from that of an electric guitar and similar instruments. The frequencies of the bass guitar cover a wide range, from very powerful lows to the midrange of vocals and guitar. The tonal structure is also different from guitars and vocals – tube amplifiers are less frequently driven to distortion and overdrive.

An electric bass amplifier must, therefore, have a large headroom to accommodate the powerful, low frequencies without distortion. At the same time, for some music styles, a distorted sound is desired – this is where the natural dynamics of tubes in the amplifier come into play.

As always, the selection of the right equipment depends primarily on the planned application of the amplifier. Power, design, sound, and technology of an amplifier – we provide an overview of the important criteria and give examples of applications for each electric bass amplifier.

Power According to Application

The power of a bass amp significantly influences the achievable volume, as well as the headroom of the electric bass amplifier. Headroom refers to the maximum volume a tube amplifier can reach without the tubes in the power amp distorting. For a bass amp, the power must be much higher than that of other amplifiers because reproducing and amplifying low frequencies simply requires more energy. Typical power classes for bass amplifiers, depending on the underlying technology, range from about 100 watts to 700 watts. When considering power, it is crucial to think about the intended use of the bass amp. In the full context of a rock band, it is usually recommended to use an amp with about 500 watts to compete at any time with the more assertive instruments in the midrange spectrum of the sound. In practice sessions, powers around 100 watts are often sufficient! Even in recording situations and quieter bands, lower powers can be better controlled and used. For live performances without a connected PA, 500 watts of power should be available to ensure safe handling of the bass signal.

Design

Combo or Head + Cabinets? The advantages and disadvantages of different designs of the bass amp are almost transferable from guitar amplifiers – but only almost. Here are the pros and cons of the design specifically related to the bass amp:

Combo

The combo is particularly popular among guitarists! The combination of perfectly matched speakers and amplifiers is particularly interesting for musicians who want to play a mobile system.

Unfortunately, it’s a bit different for the bass amp: While there are numerous combos for the bass as well, these, in the appropriate power class and speaker area, have little in common with the mobile, quickly transportable amps of the guitarist front. With a weight of over 30 kilograms, combos are only recommended for well-trained bassists.

However, the advantages of the perfectly matched technology and the more affordable purchase prices of the bass amp combos remain.

Head + Cabinets

The combination of head and cabinets as a bass amp is interesting for all bassists who want to build their setup modularly and unfold the full strength of the amp and speakers.

Due to the different combination options, this setup provides greater freedom in sound design. With a head and individual speaker cabinets, there are hardly any limits.

On the other hand, the purchase of a head and speakers is quite expensive and not easy to transport… but the drummer will surely help with the transport of the bass amp!

Sound

When it comes to sound, the musical taste of the bassist is particularly decisive: If clear clean sounds are desired, attention should be paid to sufficient headroom, and accordingly, “quieter” preamps should be selected. Especially in metal and rock, the bass is often played distorted – here, a correspondingly hot amp is called for and can be further heated up with effects.

Attention: With bass guitars, much can be achieved through the type and size of the used speakers. Experimenting with bass guitar amps and speakers is mandatory here!

Technology

Nothing beats tubes! Dynamic, natural sounds with deep warmth and natural distortion make the bass amp with tubes stand out. The arguments here can be transferred from guitar and similar instruments to the bass amp in principle.

In the case of the bass, the power of tube technology is to be emphasized – here, 500 watts of power from the tube provide much more strength than a comparably sized transistor amp with a corresponding power amp. But even these have an advantage over tube amplifiers! The comparatively larger headroom is appreciated by bassists who prefer a more analytical clean sound.

In our opinion, the better, more natural, and above all, more musical results can be achieved with a appropriately sized tube amplifier!
